Start with "Wee Dram Report" - on family research, "Gatherings" as dinner table email discussions, and "Cousins" are individual family presentations as eBooks, and FamilyCousin.com is here. Our hope is this website will foster communications, like years ago at grandma's home gathering feasts. Today we gather with blogs, shared pictures, email postings and text messages.

Grandson Nate was attacked by a Black Bear while skiing Lake Placid.

Same Grandson reporting on Hurricane while vacationing.
Not sure these stories are true but Nate's stories are as good as "uncle-whomever"
told us cousins in the past family "gatherings".

It appears from our records that Phineas O. Osborn 1760 was the first in this line of skilled Osborn Blacksmith. From this we guess the trade was learned here and not brought with them from Ashford Kent UK?

Perhaps we can get Richard (Dick) to write down and tell us his story of what is a blacksmith and how where the skills passed down or how did he learn the family trade.

We must admit when you search Osborn and blacksmith you find a lot of them existed in the US and also a Kent UK blacksmith search shows an equally large number of names found. So the genes & DNA might be good for an Osborn creative engineering mindset for this art form.

But we find no Book on blacksmiths. Go for it Dick - we will publish it on the internet for sale.

The one at the first anvil is Dick's father Claude then the first man standing in the group of three is my Grandfather Charles Edward Osborn  the others are employees

Hi Annmarie and Ralph,
I don't know why I didn't think of this sooner, but
there is a problem with the Hawthorne address.
Chicago streets are laid out in a grid system.  I
don't know how long this system has been in place, but
I suspect it has been there at least since the fire
(1871).

http://hometown.aol.com/ctapacefan/streetno.html

State Street is 0 in the numbering system, so the
address 44 W Hawthorne would put it just west of State
Street.  The problem with that is that Hawthorne is
pretty far north.  There IS no State Street that far
north because the lake moves west very quickly north
of the Loop. Hawthorne runs from 450W to 600 W - a
very short street!  And it dead ends at Lake Shore
Drive.  There's 8 blocks to every mile, so 44
Hawthorne would be just shy of 1/2 mile into Lake
Michigan even in 1910.

So where does that leave us?
Jeanne 04/09/08

My guess is the street was renumbered at a later date. I also could be a good
bet it was near the lake - so was prime land and bought by a business for
building or a hotel.

My realtor wife said  - go to town hall dept of land records and research
the land deed plots and the history will show the changes. Real estate deals
do this all the time to verify the plots ownership lean etc.

Makes sense to me.

The Gosborn eBook needs a story writer (you) with an imagination - of what interest's him - so he is writing of his interests - and is already known from his experience.

If I were the local TV interview show who came to your family for an interview, what subject would you want to talk about?

Your ancestry information is very compelling. but what about you and Jan as cousins. If this were a Christmas letter from you all and Jan was writing it what would it say? the I would ask what did you do at Hercules

You have said:
I spent about 30 years working for Hercules Inc. in jobs ranging from that of a staff engineer to quality assurance specialist a job in which I was tasked to approve, audit and monitor the company’s suppliers. Spent a lot of time standing beside computers but always had someone to punch the keys for me thus the almost total incompetence in using one now.

Before Ralph's site with the bits and pieces and pictures etc went down this afternoon we managed to print copies of photos of Caroline, Hart, Webster and P. Alden and I am so pleased. We briefly corresponded with my great Uncle Charles Raymond Osborn before his death in 1976 (William's Youngest). He indicated that their was little interaction between the Nebraska and New York sides of the family during his early years, however he mentioned that his older brother Arthur Osborn(my grandfather) arranged a visit from his Uncle Hart after William's death. He also said that a cousin by the name of Rockwood came to visit. This was Caroline's son I believe. Uncle Ray passed on before he was able to send us the picture he had of his Uncle Hart.

Let's fix this gap of communication between our families.
how is your daughter doing? anything new?

The immigration of Frances Majer has ship records listing her as a servant. She left Velke Hosteradky, Bohemia (Czech), and is traveling on a ship called Rein that is arriving on Sept 5, 1912. she is with 16 other female people - 14 are missionary, two of them live in Coraopolis Pa. We wonder what church sponsored the trip.

Well Frances was married and the family attended the First Baptist Church just up the house street in McKee's Rocks. I would suggest the immigration was through that church group. Coraopolis may have been the Church center for this activism. They were very active in growing the church with missionary efforts. The two ship log names are local's who had the job of bringing new recruits to the US. The logs shows they all were women.

Not sure what was the reason she left to go. There may have been an early Baptist group starting there. She was smart and maybe the family saw a future for her and a spark for spirited adventure - alone  this- was a bit protected under this travel along with a religious group. She was listed as a servant and my guess is that Mary Crothers (Fran thinks cancer) was in need of house help. The deal may have been you cover the travel etc costs and adopted a servant - a form of indenture.

Baptist was a growing religion in 1900 then they had trouble in many of these European countries since the established church fought their growing evangelical ways.

Interesting Richard Waite was married in Paulerspury and Towcester Northamptonshire became a Baptist minister but he left UK because of other church pressures there and then his Family helped form the church starting in Lorrane and then area around Adams NY. (we have emailed a women who visited the Paulerspury church records to confirm his wife's name for us)

Life in a small town, a Ralph eBook

Life in a small town runs at a different pace. It seems to be set by the local business attitudes and activities.  It also could be the Pennsylvania Dutch (German) people. They were dedicated hard workers but at a farmers pace.

My hometown was Sellersville, which is next to Perkasie, Souderton, Telford, Quakertown and far away Doylestown - the county seat. Actually my family was renting in 17 Noble St, Sellersville and mom and dad decided to build their house up on a hill just outside of Sellersville in West Rockhill Township. It was well named since we had these red colored rocks everywhere we tried to dig.

This rambling is a "Mackway thing" (my mother's family) they take a written road and follow it to a crossroad in their mind and then make a turn and keep repeating these turns until they have lost the reader in a maze of written subject turns. But we need to get back to Life in the slow lane.(to read more work in progress visit Ralph Blog above:

John Dexter Osborn  5 MAY 1849 - 2 DEC 1935  was Charles Osborn's brother.    Owned in 1923 a Blacksmith Shop in Depauville, New York
John Dexter joined the Sells Bros. circus as a youth, was their head blacksmith and horse trainer. Was a blacksmith in a general shop from 1859, retired in 10/1923. Broke his hip around 1923.

Son of John D. was William Eugene Osborn 1895-1935 was a blacksmith in 1920.Lived in Sandy Creek Village, Oswego Co., NY in 1900 to at least 1920.

Ralph, my grandfather Charles Edward Osborn was born in DePauville N.Y.
12/20/1855  He came to G.R. about 1890 and roomed with The George Finch family.
He married Elizabeth  Ebner on 1892 and they had 2 children  Claud Dexter b. 6/16/1893
and a daughter Lula born 1897. Lula died in about 1917-1918.

I heard that Charles got a girl in trouble in N.Y. so he left and came here, probably because
His brother John Dexter had a blacksmith shop and also because Charles grandparent
lived near by in Caledonia and were farmers.
Charles returned to N.Y. for are reunion in 1936 after not going back for 46 years

Charles Edward died in 1939 and his wife Elizabeth died in 1945. Hope this is useful                        04/04/08 Dick

Ralph:  I never knew your site existed, when I opened it up after reading your reply to me I was AMAZED.  You have totally covered most everything that is known about our family.

THANK YOU  for telling me about this. I don't think I can add much more to this history. I will again look thru my writings to see if I can find anymore. I must tell you that I have just spent at least a 1/2 hour looking thru your information.      diosbo , Richard "Dick" Osborn

But for the past few days we have been discussing how - post slavery rule changes - the Baptist Church could have use missionaries to become  immigration "agents" and using church system for managing indentured service with these people who come. They had been doing their worldwide expansion movement with growth using a form of minister indenture staring early in the 1800.

To research the Missionary Baptist "immigration agent" theory - we have an example we think - here are 3 passengers to pursue and find what became of them. the Rein ship log shows - people from Czech villages, it also shows these two missionaries and one servant - in addition to our known history of Frances Majer:
