Leon Waite III letter to Ralph Waite

I saw a post on Ancestry.com from March 27, 2004 that you were trying to
locate the Leon Masters Waite family.

Now you've found them!  I am Leon Masters Waite (the 4th).  There are 4 of
us Leon Masters Waites:

1.  Son of Levi John Waite

2.  My grandfather

3.  My father, born 2/9/1929 and living in Daphne, AL

4.  Me, born 2/20/1959 in Flushing, NY

My mother was Louise Marie Breer 12/26/1928.  I have some information on
her family, William Breer, Elizabeth Reiland, Iowa

My grandmother (married to Leon Masters Waite, Jr.) was Rita Leonardy (or
Leonardi).  I recently found a very interesting website about the Leonardi
family of St. Augustine FL, very interesting!

I had a great uncle, Leon Jr's brother, Stephen Browning Waite, he put
together most of the information that I have about the Waite family.

I would be very interested in seeing what you have, I'm especially
interested in:

1.  Where John Waite and Sara Masters came from in England.

2.  Levi John Waite's Civil War service in 10th NYHA.

Please keep in touch!

Thanks,

Leon Waite

*********************

We are excited about finding a living Waite family connection beyond our
direct branch.

We will share what we know and hopefully gain some added insight to the
Waite family. I have many web site related to my world.

A start could always be ralphwaite.com (easy to remember).

However, perhaps for your ancestry I suggest you start by using the:
http://dexnow.com/

Select "yesterdays" and the ID is bess and password 32,
that was my grandmother (Earle's wife) and the year of her death from
cancer. There is a private place in dexterblog.com that uses the same entry.

Within "yesterdays" you will find a private tree and some pictures.

Also the "Ancestry Clan" section the "Waite Clan" section has maps and known
history of John and Sara Waite marriage and birth origin.
Any problems let me know. Nothing fancy just a place to put what we know.

We again thank you for the contact...

Best Cousin Regards
Ralph "Dexter" (Osborn) Waite Jr.

Ralph,

You sure have a lot of questions!

Beyond my grandfather, Leon Jr. I don't have much personal knowledge.  I
know Leon Jr. was a hotel manager at various hotels including the Atlantan
in Atlanta, DuPont Plaza in Miami, and Holiday Inn in San Juan, Puerto
Rico.  I seem to recall that his father was in hotel management also, but
I'm not positive.

My father, Leon 3rd probably knows more.  Unfortunately, he still does his
correspondence with a pen!, so I don't find the time to write him often.
Perhaps if you wrote to him yourself, he would answer some of you
questions.  He's been retired for quite a few years now.  Here is his
address:

Mr. Leon Waite
9510 Chamberlain Pass
Daphne, AL  36526

As for Levi John's civil war service, I saw a roster on a web site one
time.  I think they had him down as Levi J. Wait.  I sent a query off
somewhere and they just told me the same information that was on the web
site (not much), I don't seem to have that email anymore :(

Here is what my information (Compiled by Stephen Browning Waite) says about
Levi John Waite:

Born 4/13/1846
Married Etta M. Clark in 1870 - Charlotte, Leon M., William, Genevieve
Levi John Waite was in Hungerford Collegiate Institute when the Civil War
broke out.  With his Father's consent necessary because of his age, he
enlisted in Co. B 10th N.Y.H.A and served until the end of the war with
only one furlough during the three year period.  For over 50 years he ran a
hardware store in Belleville, New York.  He and Etta Clark Waite are both
buried there and the family home is still standing although somewhat
modified over the years.

Here is what Stephen Browning Waite's information says about Edith May
Jacobs:

"Jacob/Jacobs.  His father, Peter Jacob married Catherine Kemmelein.  He
was born in 1800 in Gross Broau! - Prussia - Germany.  She was born in
Coblentz, Germany.  With 5 sons they came to U.S. in 1834.  Took 90 days in
sailing vessel from Bremmen to New York.  Peter was second oldest son.

Peter Jacob(s) ran a drug store in Hamilton, Ohio for many years until his
death from a heart attack 2 years after my Mother (Edith May Jacob) was
born.  She was the youngest of 11 children.  Both he and his wife, his
parents and my Mother (Edith May Jacob Waite) are buried in adjoining lots
there.  The reference by everyone to Peter Jacob's Drug store over the many
years resulted in acceptance of the "s" as a part of the name.

In tracing back on my Grandmother, Elizabeth Catherine Myers (known as
"Kate" which is the name on the old Family silverplate) was handicapped by
loss of the old family Bible back when my Mother was moving to Tryon, N.C.
and I was moving from Charlotte, N.C. to Baltimore, Md. in 1940.  My
information came from my Mother and is complete as regards names and
marriages, but lacks dates."

I'm afraid I'm not very organized, and don't have a lot of time to devote
to this right now.  I recently ran across the typewritten information from
Stephen Browning Waite, but I haven't found the information I got off web
sites a few years back.

I wish I was retired, I just spent the night working on servers at St.
Mary's Hospital from 10:00 p.m. to 9:30 a.m. and I'm feeling pretty
"half-baked" right now.

P.S.  I'm also going to forward the transcript that I sent to Jason
Colflesh back in 2002 in a separate email.

Thanks,

Leon Waite

Here is an interesting side light to Sara E. Waite,

Unknown newsclipping - 1925

MRS. JENNINGS

Jay street, this afternoon. She had been ill about three weeks.

She was born Oct. 13, 1841, the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John
Waite.

Mrs. Jenning was the last of a family of seven children. She was born in
Adams but had resided here for the past 30 years.

She is survived by the following nieces: Mrs. W. W. Reed of Seattle, Mrs.

and by the following nephews: H. W. Waite of this city, Attorney Fred Waite,

The funeral will be held from the home Saturday afternoon at 2, the Rev. Guy

will be made in Adams

*****************

Ralph Note:  Fred B. Waite was my ggreatfather(died 1941), Flora (Waite)
Archer was his sister ( died 1959 - I met her at her farm). Not sure the
name H. W. Waite, we did have a sons of Fred named Fredrick Howard Waite
plus Earle C. Waite.

Did your Leon Waite Sr get education in New York?
Our history shows he married Edith May Jacobs born around Hamilton Ohio. What was his line of work and why did he move to FL where they give birth to L. Waite Jr.

I notice there was a Leon Masters Waite Sr. attending the Brockport College in 1897 that would make Leon waite Sr 20 years old.

Leon Masters Waite, Sr
Born: 25 MAR 1877 - NY
Marr: BEF 1907 -
Died: AFT 1936 -
Father: Levi John Waite
Mother: Etta Mary Clark

Did Levi John waite serve in the Civil war? I see his wife Etta Mary Clark lived to be a ripe age of 92.

Do you hear anything about Leon Sr siblings William H. and Charlotte  E. and Genevieve Waite all born in NY.

Do you know any other living Waite relatives?

Ralph

Ralph,

I got in yesterday, Thank You!

About 3 years ago I was communicating with Jason Colflesh, I see he is a
pretty close relation.  It looks like some of the info I gave him made it
into your tree?

I am now very interested in Paulerspury, I had not heard of that before.

Thanks,

*****************No problem.

When I think about it, I guess my little corner of the family tree is
pretty small, as my father Leon 3rd was an only child,  and his father and
uncle are both dead now.  As you said, I guess that makes it more important
to document the history for those to come.  So based on that, I guess my
father is the best place to start.  Though he's retired, he seems to keep
himself pretty busy putzing around the house, so if you contact him I can't
really predict how helpful he will be.  His "girlfriend" is fairly computer
literate.  With you permission I could pass on the link and password to
your site - maybe taking a look at that would motivate him to dig deep into
the memory banks.  He may know about that college you were asking about,
too.

Sorry I know the email questions come in waves.

It is because - you are a living relative among so few.

Small memory details can provide others insight worth a lifetime of
feelings. We have a unique DNA and genes of purpose based on our heritage.
We pass them on to our children. Documentation and the internet is a new
thing for our use.

Thank you for your contribution to date. You and your family links have
information to share if you will.

Time is not the driving force for study. Share what you can when you can. I

am the search engine of today for our Waite tree. Jason is in the young

Tell me more about your world and family...

nothing is unimportant in this search.

Let me blog the details for us in "private" sections and share. I will

Ralph,

This is great!  Thank you.

If you contact my father, you can tell him that I suggested it and gave you
his address.  If you have specific questions (college, etc.) be sure to ask
to get him started.  I vaguely remember something about a resort in New
Hampshire?  Also the question about how they moved to Florida.

Thanks,

Leon Waite

*******************That's great, thanks.

I remembered a couple things since emailed you last.

1.  My father has a very interesting story about being in a town he'd never
been in, and somebody he'd never met before calling him by name - Mr.
Waite, mistaking him for some other Waite...  Don't recall where that
happened, though.

2.  My brother gave my dad a laptop a couple years back, he doesn't use it
himself, but his girlfriend Marian uses it for email, etc.  Her email is
Marian9510@aol.com.

I don't have any old pictures of the Waite family, my father must have them
all...

Thanks,

Leon Waite

*******************

My brother, Jonathan Randall Waite, lives in Oregon now, I don't think he's
too interested in this stuff.

My sister, Linda Marie Waite Nevin, lives in Eagle, CO now.  I think she is
interested, and she may possibly have some family photos, especially of my
parents and grandparents.

Thanks,

Leon Waite

****************88You've just inspired me to send a long overdue email to my sister.  We're
both very busy with families, etc. (excuse).  Once we get up to date again
I'll see if I can get her involved with the Waite history...

Thanks,

Leon Waite

***************Manton - probably a typo?

I don't have any pictures of anything!  Sorry!

I believe Levi went to Hungerford after his Civil War service ended (1865)

Thanks,

Leon Waite

did pitch it to spam as Leon lV did not tell me or ask if he could give out my email and I do not accept any email from strangers for fear of a corrupt computer.  Leon lll has received the package you sent and looked at it. He has jotted you a note to post and he is giving your package to his daughter as she has the family information you are asking for.

Thank you for your concern. The winds and rain is going to be devastating for a lot of people in our area. We expect to lose trees this time because of the side of the storm we are on. We are not on the good side of the storm.

We have chose to stay as Leon has not been well and does not feel like he can handle being away. He has been very sick for almost three months. We have found out what the cause is and he is getting better every day now.

****************Ralph,

Thanks for the heads up.

I called my dad earlier today because of the hurricane coverage, he told me
they were planning to stay but he thinks they'll be fine because they are 4
miles from the water (Mobile Bay).

I had him tell me that story again about being recognized as Mr. Waite.  He
said he was in Bangor, Maine making a sales call, and the secretary said,
How are you doing Mr. Waite?  He said do I know you?  She said that she
bought all her furniture from him in Watertown, NY!

He said he was going to send you some information about his grandfather
regarding Colgate and hotels in New Hampshire in Florida (I think).

Leon

Ralph,

I was going to give my sister the password to your web site, but then I
thought it would be better for you to decide that yourself.

I sent her an email earlier letting her know that you would probably be
emailing her:

Ralph,

Ran across this page that mentions John Waite & Co and W.A. Waite

***************

Ralph,

I called my dad about 2 hours ago, they are fine, the house is fine.  They
lost some tree limbs, and all their pecans blew off the trees.  Lost power
for about 8-10 hours, which wasn't bad compared to what happened to a lot
of people.
