Welcome to the Gathering
Some cousins have requested - and we will comply - that we only publish their emails in their private sections.
We will continue to summarize interesting comments in this Gathering. Below are some educational comment we hope will help.

The internet is a place that brings concerns about personal privacy and open communications.
Most people do not know that every email they send and receive is archived by various search database servers which constantly roam the web traffic. This means nothing is private that moves in the open transactions on the web. We do strive to make private directories with ID & PW control of access. This makes a directory "private" since it is closed to others.

Here are a few word of education for those new to the internet publishing world.
These rules are true for any internet web site you would consider using.
The FamilyCousin.com directories are open with the exception of those directories that we made "private". The Gathering - by design  - is a shared Blog environment and is open. The family tree is open except for the "private tree" which blocks and protects data on the living folks. We have setup FTP ID & PW for eBook writers and this allows them to send directly to private their files without using open email. There is a Tutorial eBook Page - on this site - in case you need to learn how to use the software to send FTP to your private section. Further protection can be made using your own Domain-name.com and park it here and we will make it all private. You then have full control and access to your domain. The internet web should not be avoided and feared - but rather understood and then managed and controlled by you. We are here to help our cousins in that regard.

Czechoslovakia 1900-1930 eBook
pictures from the family - 30 years Frances Majer away from her birth home

There were an amazing number of Czech immigrants in early 1900-1930.
The ships logs show a growing number of these passengers.
I am not sure what was the driving force behind this massive movement but the economic hardships and war drums could have been the primary factors.
The religious opportunity presented at that time appears to be an emerging Baptist movement trying to raise new money and to expand the church plus congregations. We have found the village name of
Velké Hostěrádky listed in many ship logs.

I think the Frances Majer 1912 trip on the ship Rein was escape the Czech regional political uprisings and war moves that were just beginning.

The news from my Czech research is that I have identified photos from periods that somewhat date the military uniforms found in Frances picture files. Using 1912 -1913 Austria Hungary history we can determine the local and state environment that maybe significant to her Sept 1912 immigration. These findings are copied and linked in our Wee Dram Report in the Gatherings . The picture found shows a 1898 KuK Calvary uniform that fits the pictures, We even found several helmets examples to compare. The badge of Medal found is similar to those on the Josef Majer photos. We are not sure of all the names and the faces - but - later on that. The dark looking guy in one picture is not known yet. He could have been involved in a national underground movement for all we know - he sure looks the part for a Czech Slovenia movie.

The Majer family were obviously well connected in the Czech military since Josef obtained the rank of Captain as shown on the helmet and was active in the town. Josef Majer medals mean he was well respected and informed.  We know they were smart since Josef and their daughter was very intelligent. They knew it was wise to get #1 sister to the America for her future education and career. The use of the Baptist Missionaries would make sense in that plan.

the Majer family was in the military, this picture was taken 1930
Josef and his wife are on the left, Frances is next to her mother, Frank is seated next to Sam Carothers.

Frank may have been 75 in these pictures which would be 10 years older than Sam Crothers.

The Majer family has pictures which show they were active in the military. These history pictures were kept by a young Frances Majer who left in September 1912. She just left before the Second Balkian War in 1913 was about to begin. She left the country as it was crumbling with leader killings and the Austria-Hungary KuK military was starting to have turmoil. Her family being in the military so they were well aware of the future that was to come. They may not have seen WWI  and would not have expected Russia to control them after WWII. Frances went back for a visit in happy times before WWII began.

This may have been Josef Majer in a picture  1914-1918 KuK Kavallerie

The k.u.k. or common army was organized after the establishment of the Austro-Hungarian Dual Monarchy in 1867 and existed until the end of World War I in 1918. Prior to 1867, Austria's ground forces were those of the Austrian Empire named k.k. for kaiserlich, königlich. The Hungarian military (light cavalry, infantry, and artillery) waged a successful War of Independence against the imperial army from 1848 until its surrender to Czarist army dispatched to help out the kaiserlich army in 1849. After the surrender, the Hungarian units were either disbanded or dislocated and national Hungarian military units could not be organized again until 1867 Ausgleich, or Compromise.

Farming was the main job of those families who remained. The German war took away many of these farms.
The standard of living in America was vastly superior to those in Czechoslovakia.
So the opportunity promised for the young was to go make a new life in this place.
